Il mitico 1966 si inseriva anche in un periodo di incredibile crescita nell’economia degli States, con il progredire di grandi opere pubbliche (soprattutto le reti stradali ed autostradali) e con l’ascesa costante della produzione industriale.
Inutile ribadire come la cosiddetta “rust belt” del Midwest è testimonianza di una frenesia produttiva che vedeva due grandi poli di riferimento: le acciaierie di Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) e l’industria motoristica GM di Detroit (Michigan). Non è un caso che proprio nel Midwest il rock avesse assunto caratteri crudi e “sporchi”, quasi a riflettere la dura realtà delle aree industriali e dei “quartieri-dormitorio” (basti ricordare quello enorme a sud-est di Chicago al confine con l’Indiana). Da quel carattere “dirty” del rock emergeranno già evidenti i caratteri del “proto-punk” americano, precursore genuino e ancora non politicizzato del punk del decennio successivo (che gli inglesi faranno proprio con “fiuto per il mercato musicale”).
