Garage rock Usa 1966. Discografia minore / 12

CALEIDOSCOPIO ROCK USA ANNI 60 ?? 


Come già accennato in precedenti articoli, un fattore di grande difficoltà per gli attuali studiosi del rock americano degli anni 60 è costituito dalle ricorrenti omonimie tra le garage rock bands di quei tempi (anche in aree geografiche vicine e confinanti tra loro). La questione era altresì  spinosa per i contemporanei, specialmente in sede discografica; e per tentare di stabilire una qualche differenziazione tra bands omonime si ricorreva già allora a cambi ortografici, scrittura della pronuncia, microvariazioni nei nomi etc. Basti pensare per esempio al caso “Night Riders” (e infatti si incontravano varianti omofone quali “Knight Riders”, “Night Ryders”, “Nite Riders”, “Nite Ryders” etc.); ma a volte il tutto finiva per complicarsi ulteriormente, dal momento che sovente le varie grafie erano interne ad una stessa compagine, in base all’etichetta discografica o al periodo di attività. In buona sostanza… un ginepraio fitto e inestricabile. Nella seguente sezione ho inserito (a parità di anno, 1966) varie garage rock bands americane dai nomi quasi identici, che tuttora causano problemi e “qui pro quo” a cultori, collezionisti, appassionati e studiosi…

Oggi sono in vena di aforismi e citerò tre pensieri (di epoche diverse) che ben si adattano a tre elementi fondanti della passione infuocata che animava tante bands liceali nel 1966 in USA: gioventù, entusiasmo e audacia…

Mai come nel biennio 1965-1966 in USA l’attività del “talent-scouting” era frenetica ed incessante, tanto più se il numero di garage rock bands attive era davvero esorbitante e la quantità di “locations” e “venues” pareva non aver limiti, dalla piccola bettola al grande “dance hall”.

E visto l’andazzo… non era raro scovare, nascosti tra i clienti di un “parlor” o di un “adult club”, svariati managers musicali o più spesso “osservatori sul campo”, sempre pronti ad avvicinare bands promettenti e con una marcia in più. Naturalmente la concorrenza tra bands era spietata, figuriamoci  quella tra “osservatori”… Il problema radicale per le rock bands era ovviamente il “budget”, quasi sempre ridotto all’osso, cui si poteva rimediare o con un “management fai-da-te” o affidandosi alla buona sorte. Ma purtroppo la “fauna manageriale” era alquanto variegata e affollata e il rischio di imbattersi in manager improvvisati, poco trasparenti o del tutto disonesti non era così remoto. Nella sezione discografica qui di seguito spuntano qua e là alcune bands che sfortunatamente incapparono in qualche spiacevole sorpresa…

“Io ora credo, guardandomi indietro, che non abbiamo combattuto contro il nemico… Abbiamo combattuto contro noi stessi. E il nemico era dentro di noi”.

Il finale del film “Platoon” (1986) di Oliver Stone riassume il dramma universale della tragedia della Guerra del Vietnam, in quell’inferno dove “il vero nemico è quello che si annida nel più profondo della coscienza”.

In relazione al tema della nostra rubrica posso solo dire che l’impatto della chiamata alle armi fu devastante per moltissime bands di garage rock americano nel biennio 1966-1967; videro interrompersi in modo traumatico la parabola musicale che avevano avviato, senza poter (in molti casi) raccogliere nemmeno i frutti di medio termine di tanto impegno ed entusiasmo impiegati nel costruire un’idea di futuro per le loro compagini musicali.

CALEIDOSCOPIO ROCK USA ANNI 60

Il 1966 fu anche l’anno in cui si raccolsero pienamente i frutti della British Invasion che nel biennio precedente aveva colpito in pieno gli States, fecondando la musica dei giovani con le pietre miliari dei “soliti noti”, in primis Beatles (“Beatles ‘65”, “Rubber Soul”), Stones (“12 x 5”, “The Rolling Stones”, “The Rolling Stones, Now!”), ma anche “The Animals” e i mai abbastanza considerati “The Kinks”, che, anche se in modi meno appariscenti, forse più di tutti aprirono un’incredibile ondata di gruppi epigoni e di “cover” a ripetizione di hits come “You Really Got Me” e “All Day And All Of The Night” (brani che come pochi altri influenzarono il gusto delle band liceali statunitensi emergenti in quegli anni).

Eccoci ad un’ulteriore tappa del viaggio nella discografia garage rock USA “minore” del 1966.

Sempre di più si noterà come il 1966 sia stato un anno di incredibili trasformazioni e “connivenze musicali” parallele, dove era possibile trovare epigoni della “British Invasion”, gruppi dallo stile “retro” ancora debitori dell’eredità del rockabilly, altri già sostenitori della corrente “protopunk”, altri ancora già orientati alle sperimentazioni dei primordi del movimento psichedelico (con il risultato di incredibili forme ibride di “garage psichedelico” dai suoni del tutto nuovi e pionieristici). Interessante notare come sovente le sperimentazioni più significative ed audaci fossero riscontrabili in “etichette minori”, meno ancorate rispetto a quelle “di prima fascia” alla necessità di dare peso importante al gusto dominante e alle ragioni del mercato.

Il mitico 1966 si inseriva anche in un periodo di incredibile crescita nell’economia degli States, con il progredire di grandi opere pubbliche (soprattutto le reti stradali ed autostradali) e con l’ascesa costante della produzione industriale.

Inutile ribadire come la cosiddetta “rust belt” del Midwest è testimonianza di una frenesia produttiva che vedeva due grandi poli di riferimento: le acciaierie di Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) e l’industria motoristica GM di Detroit (Michigan). Non è un caso che proprio nel Midwest il rock avesse assunto caratteri crudi e “sporchi”, quasi a riflettere la dura realtà delle aree industriali e dei “quartieri-dormitorio” (basti ricordare quello enorme a sud-est di Chicago al confine con l’Indiana). Da quel carattere “dirty” del rock emergeranno già evidenti i caratteri del “proto-punk” americano, precursore genuino e ancora non politicizzato del punk del decennio successivo (che gli inglesi faranno proprio con “fiuto per il mercato musicale”). Garage rock USA 1966. Discografia minore (p. 5)

CALEIDOSCOPIO ROCK  USA ANNI 60   Nel 1966 il “virus musicale” negli Stati Uniti era molto contagioso e si calcola che non meno del 60% dei giovani teenagers (o comunque “under 20”) suonasse in una rock band, indipendentemente da area geografica, estrazione sociale o disponibilità economiche.

Il budget limitato era sovente un ostacolo importante in sede manageriale ma soprattutto sul versante dell’incisione dei 45 giri, con i connessi problemi già da me approfonditi in precedenti articoli. Nella presente sezione discografica e nelle successive ci si imbatterà parecchie volte in “incisioni di nicchia” e di etichette rare, in cui emergeranno chiaramente gli esiti di budget limitati e del ricorso a mezzi di presa di suono anche poco ortodossi, finanche ad effetti “homemade” dettati dalle condizioni “di fortuna” degli “studi” discografici (non di rado “adattati” o sistemati alla meno peggio).

Garage rock USA 1966. Discografia minore (p. 4)

CALEIDOSCOPIO ROCK USA ANNI ’60  Ecco un’altra tappa del lungo viaggio nella discografia “minore” del garage rock USA del 1966.

C’è da rilevare che quanto più si proseguirà nell’itinerario tanto più ci si addentrerà nelle aree più ignote della storiografia del rock americano degli anni ‘60; e in particolare quelle aree che personalmente più mi appassionano in quanto ben poco sondate dagli studi ufficiali di grande respiro, relative a realtà musicali ancora poco o per nulla battute dalle indagini musicologiche. A mio parere infatti sono svariati i versanti ancora inesplorati o appena sfiorati da una storia del rock sotto certi aspetti un po’ dozzinale, che non di rado preferisce sorvolare su ambiti interessantissimi a livello storico seppur poco appariscenti dal punto di vista del desiderio della “grande scoperta”.

Ma a noi le “grandi scoperte riguardanti i soliti noti” poco importano… e continuiamo a scavare dove pochi passano…
