Caleidoscopio rock Usa anni 60

Si sa… quando il budget per le sessioni di registrazione è limitato… sarebbe bene ingranare subito con i suoni e l’esecuzione complessiva, per evitare il prolungarsi dei “takes” e per far sì che il prezzo non lieviti spaventosamente, gravando sulle “tasche piccole” di una band di liceali di metà anni ‘60. Eppure gli imprevisti erano sempre dietro l’angolo e gli aneddoti sugli “incidenti” in vista della sala di registrazione erano davvero innumerevoli e assortiti: dal cantante quasi afono al batterista alticcio, dalle “location di fortuna” (sottotetti, basements, stanze di hotel dismesse, ex depositi riadattati etc.) alle strumentazioni di presa di suono inadeguate per il garage rock, dagli errori di orario degli appuntamenti agli equivoci su indirizzi ed edifici (o perfino inaspettati casi di omonimie fra agenti…). In buona sostanza le sessioni di registrazione erano tutt’altro che “passeggiate di salute”… e nella presente sezione discografica compaiono almeno tre bands che dovettero affrontare inattesi e spiacevoli “aumenti dei costi”, purtroppo anche a scapito del prodotto finale…

Credete che per una garage rock band di liceali di metà anni ‘60 in USA contassero poco o nulla la buona sorte e qualche bel colpo di fortuna al momento giusto? Non la pensavano così moltissimi membri di compagini musicali di quei tempi, sulle quali fiorivano abbondanti aneddoti riguardanti vezzi, “fisse” e vere e proprie forme di scaramanzia legate a quelli che per noi potrebbero essere solo dettagli ininfluenti. La casistica era quantomai varia, ma spaziava dalla disposizione in auto durante i viaggi, alle azioni poste in essere per montare gli impianti di amplificazione, addirittura al colore delle “business card” distribuite agli emissari delle case discografiche o ai “talent scouts”. Fatto sta che se per scaramanzia il bassista andava a sedersi sul sedile anteriore del van… poteva costituire un “problema”, così come poteva essere grave dimenticarsi di qualche “rito” prima di un concerto o di una sessione di registrazione in studio. Nella presente sezione discografica figurano almeno tre bands che consideravano assolutamente fondamentali i “flussi positivi” e un buon equilibrio karmico…

Prendete una garage rock band americana anni ‘60 con “management autogestito”, aggiungeteci un’etichetta autoprodotta con denominazione “ad hoc” e vita brevissima, in più metteteci un “modus operandi” di piccolo cabotaggio nella distribuzione del singolo 45 giri (amici, ambito di high school, cerchia di conoscenti non ampia)…. Poi magari, come se non bastasse, qualche spiacevole inconveniente nei locali in cui venivano tenute in deposito le copie delle incisioni (es. ambienti allagati, “basements” compromessi da eventi avversi più o meno dolosi). Mescolate il tutto e molto probabilmente ne uscirà un oggetto da collezione raro, ambitissimo da cultori ed appassionati, che con una certa facilità potrebbe raggiungere sul mercato di settore valutazioni imponenti, in certi casi perfino a 3 zeri… Nella seconda metà della presente sezione spuntano alcuni esempi di “potenziali candidati” al raggiungimento di cifre interessanti in un futuro non lontano…

C’è una massima arcinota che recita così: “Volere è potere”.

Per carità… nulla da obiettare in via teorica. Ma molto spesso la dura realtà fa scricchiolare paurosamente questa sentenza, tanto più se ci si trova a fare i conti con budget limitati o si debba prestare massima attenzione a spese ed entrate, calcolando le mosse da intraprendere per non incorrere in tracolli di bilancio.
Stesso problema per decine e decine di garage rock bands statunitensi degli anni Sessanta nel periodo della “high school”, allorquando un eccesso di spesa poteva risultare fatale. Va da sé che in moltissimi casi il management del gruppo era del tutto autogestito, magari affidato al padre del batterista, al fratello maggiore del cantante o al cugino che vantava agganci con qualche emissario di case discografiche locali. Nella seconda metà della presente sezione discografica figurano varie bands che affidarono le loro sorti ad un management autogestito, purtroppo a volte con risultati perfino controproducenti.

Nella seconda metà degli anni Sessanta per una rock band emergente americana era fondamentale la possibilità di spostarsi, percorrendo quella già fitta rete stradale che proprio in quegli anni stava conoscendo un “boom” per estensione e capillarità. Tra persone, strumenti, amplificatori, cavi, dispositivi di vario tipo… era necessario spazio, ma anche facilità di utilizzo del mezzo di trasporto. E fu così che i “vans” ebbero grande fortuna nel mondo musicale giovanile. Ma se tutti pensassero immediatamente al solito van Volkswagen in stile “hippie” probabilmente sarebbero fuori strada. Le bands in genere preferivano altri modelli, in primis Chevrolet Sport Van (confidenzialmente “Chevy”) o il Dodge A100 Sportsman; ma probabilmente il prediletto era il Ford Econoline, una sorta di “minibus ibrido” ritenuto molto funzionale nel trasportare la “ferraglia musicale”. Già altrove in un precedente articolo avevo accennato all’Econoline rosso mattone usato a ritmo incessante per le strade di Ohio e Pennsylvania dalla band “The Pied Pipers” nel biennio 1967-1969. Ma anche nella presente sezione discografica figurano bands che ne sfruttarono le qualità…

Se una garage rock band americana anni ‘60 riusciva ad aprire un’esibizione in una data di tour di una band di primo piano, probabilmente poteva avere la fortuna (occasione più unica che rara) di esibirsi in un palazzetto ampio o comunque in luoghi con buone (se non ottime) acustiche. Ma era l’eccezione… Se si era meno fortunati c’erano le piste di pattinaggio su rotelle, o le palestre di “high schools”, o ancora i luoghi di ritrovo per i “frat parties”. Ma il più delle volte ci si doveva aggiustare in qualche modo, in “venues” davvero improvvisate ed ostiche, riadattando improbabili “locations” adibite a tutt’altro o perfino all’aperto (tipo in parcheggi di benzinai, o in aree limitrofe alle rivendite di automobili, o persino in ex campi di football ormai in disuso etc.). Nella presente sezione di discografia incontriamo varie bands che mai ebbero il privilegio di fare da “opening band” ma, al contrario, dovettero confrontarsi
anche con la dura realtà della strada, costrette non di rado ad esibirsi in condizioni difficili, talvolta “estreme”…

Come già accennato in precedenti articoli, un fattore di grande difficoltà per gli attuali studiosi del rock americano degli anni 60 è costituito dalle ricorrenti omonimie tra le garage rock bands di quei tempi (anche in aree geografiche vicine e confinanti tra loro). La questione era altresì  spinosa per i contemporanei, specialmente in sede discografica; e per tentare di stabilire una qualche differenziazione tra bands omonime si ricorreva già allora a cambi ortografici, scrittura della pronuncia, microvariazioni nei nomi etc. Basti pensare per esempio al caso “Night Riders” (e infatti si incontravano varianti omofone quali “Knight Riders”, “Night Ryders”, “Nite Riders”, “Nite Ryders” etc.); ma a volte il tutto finiva per complicarsi ulteriormente, dal momento che sovente le varie grafie erano interne ad una stessa compagine, in base all’etichetta discografica o al periodo di attività. In buona sostanza… un ginepraio fitto e inestricabile. Oggi sono in vena di aforismi e citerò tre pensieri (di epoche diverse) che ben si adattano a tre elementi fondanti della passione infuocata che animava tante bands liceali nel 1966 in USA: gioventù, entusiasmo e audacia…

Garage rock USA 1966. Discografia minore / 10

Mai come nel biennio 1965-1966 in USA l’attività del “talent-scouting” era frenetica ed incessante, tanto più se il numero di garage rock bands attive era davvero esorbitante e la quantità di “locations” e “venues” pareva non aver limiti, dalla piccola bettola al grande “dance hall”.

E visto l’andazzo… non era raro scovare, nascosti tra i clienti di un “parlor” o di un “adult club”, svariati managers musicali o più spesso “osservatori sul campo”, sempre pronti ad avvicinare bands promettenti e con una marcia in più. Naturalmente la concorrenza tra bands era spietata, figuriamoci  quella tra “osservatori”… Il problema radicale per le rock bands era ovviamente il “budget”, quasi sempre ridotto all’osso, cui si poteva rimediare o con un “management fai-da-te” o affidandosi alla buona sorte. Ma purtroppo la “fauna manageriale” era alquanto variegata e affollata e il rischio di imbattersi in manager improvvisati, poco trasparenti o del tutto disonesti non era così remoto. Nella sezione discografica qui di seguito spuntano qua e là alcune bands che sfortunatamente incapparono in qualche spiacevole sorpresa…

Il finale del film “Platoon” (1986) di Oliver Stone riassume il dramma universale della tragedia della Guerra del Vietnam, in quell’inferno dove “il vero nemico è quello che si annida nel più profondo della coscienza”.

In relazione al tema della nostra rubrica posso solo dire che l’impatto della chiamata alle armi fu devastante per moltissime bands di garage rock americano nel biennio 1966-1967; videro interrompersi in modo traumatico la parabola musicale che avevano avviato, senza poter (in molti casi) raccogliere nemmeno i frutti di medio termine di tanto impegno ed entusiasmo impiegati nel costruire un’idea di futuro per le loro compagini musicali.
