CALEIDOSCOPIO ROCK USA ANNI 60
Si può affermare che negli anni ’60 la produzione di dischi a 45 giri fosse relativamente poco costosa, dunque non era raro che gli studi di registrazione offrissero pacchetti cosiddetti “DIY” (“do it yourself”), che comprendevano il tempo di registrazione e la stampa dei dischi. Tuttavia per le bands di giovani il nodo cruciale era il versante della promozione, nota dolente per moltissimi di loro, dal momento che le case discografiche su questo tema abbandonavano a se stesse le bands, soprattutto in un periodo in cui la concorrenza era fortissima e l’offerta era perfino sovrabbondante rispetto alla domanda. Ne possiamo facilmente dedurre che non di rado i gruppi musicali iniziassero con entusiasmo travolgente, salvo poi doversi scontrare con la dura realtà della “gavetta” e della competizione spietata con compagini rivali, su aree geografiche talvolta anche piuttosto limitate.
Tra le etichette di garage rock che perseguivano la politica del “DIY” rientrava senz’altro la “Orlyn”, di proprietà di Oren Stembel, che coniò “Orlyn” dalla fusione del nome proprio e della moglie (Oren e Marilyn). Etichetta attiva a Chicago perlopiù tra 1965 e 1968, incentrata su bands di piccolo cabotaggio, si faceva pagare il tempo delle sessioni di registrazione in cambio di un centinaio di dischi, sui quali tuttavia non dava alcun sostegno promozionale, tanto che le bands stesse dovevano occuparsi poi di distribuire autonomamente le copie tra amici, parenti o intermediari per la programmazione radiofonica.
A livello storico questa pratica ha fatto sì che le incisioni “Orlyn” disponibili sul mercato siano attualmente in numero ridotto; inutile dire che tutt’oggi collezionisti e cultori siano disposti a sborsare cifre anche importanti per accaparrarsi esemplari ormai rari e di assoluta nicchia.
