CALEIDOSCOPIO ROCK USA ANNI 60
Il termine “crescendo” ci può suggerire svariate situazioni: quello musicale orchestrale, quello delle vendite sul mercato discografico, quello dei contratti con bands, musicisti, cantautori e cantanti, quello della quantità di generi musicali toccati da un’etichetta, quello del “business” e del “management” etc. etc. Tutto ciò fu raggiunto pienamente dal celebre Gene Norman [Eugene Abraham Nabatoff], vero mattatore della scena musicale statunitense (produttore, agente, proprietario di case discografiche, scopritore di talenti nei più svariati generi musicali, personaggio televisivo) che fondò non a caso l’importante etichetta “GNP-Crescendo Record Co.” a Los Angeles attorno al 1962. Sebbene l’impronta dell’etichetta fosse fin dalle origini incentrata sul jazz (con incredibili nomi della scena internazionale), sul doo-wap e poi anche sul versante delle colonne sonore cinematografiche, bisogna qui rilevare l’importante apporto nel rock, con decisivi contributi nell’ambito di surf, garage, rock psichedelico e oltre. L’etichetta è tuttora guidata dal figlio Neil Norman, musicista di rilievo, “sound engineer”, produttore, che mantiene alti ormai da anni i livelli qualitativi delle produzioni.
