Fu rilevata a sua volta da “Roulette Records” e nel 1971 venne ufficialmente dichiarata bancarotta per </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“Jubilee”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">. A fine anni ‘80 passò sotto il controllo di “Rhino Records” ed “EMI” e negli anni ‘90 inglobata in “Time Warner”. Dal 2013 rientra sotto l’amplissimo ombrello di controllo del colosso “Warner Music Group”, che rilevò il catalogo Roulette/Jubilee come conseguenza dell’assorbimento di “Parlophone”.</span></p>

La grande area metropolitana di New York è sempre stata luogo fecondo per la compresenza di generi musicali differenziati ed eterogenei, fenomeno ben visibile nella produzione delle varie etichette qui nate e cresciute. Segnaliamo qui </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>Laurie Records”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">, fondata nel 1958 dai fratelli Robert e Gene Schwartz e Allan I. Sussel e presto affermatasi come “label” attiva nel rock’n’roll, doo-wap, soul, rock classico, pop rock. Sottolineiamo che molto importante fu il suo ruolo di volano di diffusione di svariati successi della “British Invasion” sul suolo americano, fin dai primordi dell’”ondata”. Meritorio è il carattere sempre autonomo di </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“Laurie Records”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">, che seppe restare orgogliosamente indipendente nel tempo, evitando di essere inglobata e fagocitata dalle grandi etichette, che non di rado “cannibalizzavano” serialmente per legge di mercato. Colori che avevano la tipica pigmentazione rilucente e autoriflettente alla luce solare (</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“glowing in daylight”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">) dei primi psichedelici della “West Coast” tra San Francisco e Los Angeles, che pareva accendersi ulteriormente sulla pelle abbronzata di quei liberi vagabondi sognatori; quei colori saranno poi ben visibili per esempio nei successivi celeberrimi manifesti rock di Victor Moscoso e di innumerevoli locandine ed annunci di eventi della “Summer of Love” del 1967. Ecco che</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i> “Chattahoochee Records”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">, proprio negli anni 1963-1964 delle scorribande “Pranksters”, iniziava a proporre quella cromia suggestiva e iconica, accompagnata da un logo in cui campeggiava un pellerossa con copricapo e tamburi.</span><i> </i><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">Possiamo segnalare inoltre che, sebbene la discografia </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“Chattahoochee Records”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"> non fosse incentrata sul garage e sul surf rock, tuttavia nelle </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“compilations”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"> attuali si rileva un interessante ritorno di questa etichetta, così come nei cataloghi di settore e tra i cultori del genere. In quest’ultimo caso rientra pienamente l’etichetta “Paula Records” (sussidiaria di “Jewel Records”) dell’area di Shreveport (Louisiana), fondata da Stanley Lewis nel 1965; il logo è da sempre noto agli appassionati, dal momento che presentava caratteri assolutamente “retro”, con grafica quasi dai toni “liberty” e con una sorta di cammeo centrale e profilo</p>

<p class="western" align="justify"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">Ciclicamente ritorniamo a parlare di grafica delle etichette discografiche, sapendo bene che nella seconda metà degli anni ‘60 negli Stati Uniti i loghi variavano incredibilmente, dalle fattezze spartane a soluzioni quasi artistiche e complesse, dalle scelte squadrate a toni perfino neoclassicheggianti e </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“retro”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">.</span></p>

D’altronde il nome si riferiva espressamente ad una donna, in particolare alla moglie Paula dello stesso Stanley Lewis, non di rado senza nemmeno l’indicazione “Records”. I generi coperti erano variegati (dal rock al rhythm&amp;blues, al soul, al funk etc.) e l’attività (intensa fino almeno al 1973) si protrasse ulteriormente per decenni, finché il notevole catalogo venne rilevato nel settembre 2005 dalla compagine giapponese “P-Vine Records”, con estensione del mercato al sud-est asiatico.</span></p>
<p class="western" align="justify"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">Si può affermare che nell’ambito del garage rock l’etichetta </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“Paula Records” </i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">possa apparire marginale; tuttavia la qualità musicale delle incisioni ha fatto sì che vari 45 giri “Paula” siano tranquillamente entrati in “compilations” di garage rock, anche recenti.</span></p>

<p class="western" align="justify"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">Tra le moltissime etichette statunitensi del rock surf, garage e psichedelico degli anni ‘60 si è notato finora un carattere talvolta eterogeneo, con compresenza di svariati generi e stili all’interno di una stessa etichetta discografica. In altri casi la singola casa discografica decideva di creare espressamente proprie sotto-etichette dedicate a generi di nicchia, meno “commerciali”, ma poi rivelatisi fondamentali per la storia e la documentazione sonora; erano poco frequenti i casi di etichette fondate a partire da generi musicali con scarse fette di mercato. Tuttavia a più riprese emersero eccezioni interessanti e significative; si tratterà in questo articolo di un’etichetta assolutamente “</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>sui generis</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">”, la </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“Fleetwood Records”. </i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">Nata nel 1958 nell’area di Revere (Massachusetts) da un’idea “fuori scala” (e di vera nicchia) dei cugini Richard I. Blake e Raymond G. Samora, che un bel giorno vollero documentare su incisioni sonore un quantità oceanica di competizioni ed esibizioni delle cosiddette “Drum and Bugle Corps” (formazioni bandistiche del tipo “marching band” con ottoni e percussioni, accompagnate da “color guards” di ballerini) di quel periodo in U.S.A. e Canada, incluse le </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>performances</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"> ad eventi sportivi; addirittura vi furono prese di suono </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“on field”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"> delle esibizioni musicali e degli eventi connessi, soprattutto gare automobilistiche, con i relativi cerimoniali. Blake fondò persino un tabloid dedicato (“Drum Corps News”) ma col passare degli anni i generi toccati dall’etichetta si ampliarono ed inevitabilmente a metà anni ‘60 si estesero al surf, garage e poi psych rock. Purtroppo nel 1975 un vasto incendio distrusse i “masters” originali, ma la </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"><i>“Fleetwood Records”</i></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;"> intraprese un’instancabile opera di riconversione e rimasterizzazione su CD di tutte le incisioni del passato fino agli anni Ottanta, con fedeli riproduzioni di copertine e relative note (l’etichetta è tuttora attiva col nome “Fleetwood Sounds”). Nel nostro caso ovviamente evidenzieremo i soli 45 giri di surf, garage e psych rock (alcuni di non facile datazione) qui di seguito:</span></p>
